Nigel Lythgoe's looking for a few good themes Posted: 24 Sep 2010 12:36 PM PDT Sep 24, 2010 Nigel Lythgoe's looking for a few good themesEarly this morning, American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe -- who posts as @dizzyfeet on Twitter -- sent out the following tweet: "We want music for #AmericanIdol that will let the singers stay in their natural genres. The 80's, Love Songs, Billboard Top 100. Any ideas?" Well, of course, people had lots of ideas. Some of them went along topical lines, like party songs, revenge songs, cheating songs, breakup songs and patriotic songs. Others consider the source of the material -- TV & film soundtracks, songs from former Idols and one-hit wonders. A few people suggested themes that, while broadly based, still would require some creative input on the part of the contestant -- mash-ups, for instance, where the contestant would have to combine two songs (not a likely contender, since it would double the show's sync-licensing fees for that episode) or "songs we wish we'd written." At least a couple people suggested making each contestant sing a song made popular by a singer of the opposite gender. So it looks like it's not quite correct to say American Idol Season 10 is doing away with theme nights -- more like they're getting rid of genre- and artist-specific nights. What ideas for new themes do you have that would let Idol singers stick with their preferred styles? Let us know here, then go post them for @dizzyfeet on Twitter!
