In a survey by songwriters and musicians group the Performing Right Society for Music, published online, the 1992 hit topped the list of men's top tear-jerkers, followed by Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven at number two. Leonard Cohen's stirring Halellujah came in at number three ahead of Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U.  Irish singer Sinead O'Connor. U2's With Or Without You, The Verve's The Drugs Don't Work and Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia also made the top 10 for their power to reduce men to tears. While the predictable themes of love, loss and heartbreak feature prominently, PRS for Music chairman Ellis Rich said it was specific lyrics that were the key to drawing such a strong reaction. "A well-written tear-jerker is one that people can relate to and empathise with," he told music website NME in a statement. "It is this lyrical connection that can reach deep down emotionally and move even the strongest of men." Everybody Hurts featured on R.E.M's Automatic for the People album and was released as a single in 1993. It was more popular in Australia than the band's native US, peaking at number 6 on the ARIA chart and 29 on the US Billboard chart. It was rerecorded as a fundraiser for the Haiti earthquake, becoming the UK's fastest-selling charity single of the 21st century, according to NME.
