“Pop Princess no match for Eminem” |
Pop Princess no match for Eminem Posted: 12 Jul 2010 12:41 AM PDT She may be Australia's most successful pop diva, but even Kylie Minogue can't budge rapper Eminem from the top spot on the Aussie albums chart. Minogue's new record Aphrodite, her 11th studio release, had made its debut at number two on the ARIA music charts, followed closely by a live album of church songs, Hillsong's A Beautiful Exchange. But while Minogue missed out on the top spot on local charts, she remains a darling of the British public, grabbing the number one spot on the UK charts. 'I've been completely overwhelmed by the reaction to Aphrodite and to hear that the album has gone to number one is the most amazing news. I am ecstatic,' she said. 'My hopes for this album were that people would be moved, that the songs could bring about emotion. The euphoric heart of this album has taken flight and the response has been nothing short of incredible. 'My thanks, as always, to the many talented and dedicated people with whom I work and the fans who have been so supportive all these years.' Both the Australian and UK charts, released on Sunday, show a battle between Minogue and Eminem. While music's bad boy kept her from the top of the albums chart in Australia, it was the other way around in the UK with the 42-year-old singer kicking the rapper from the top spot he held last week. It's the third week in a row that Eminem has kept an Aussie act from the number one position in Australia - Adelaide pop sensation Sia and Byron Bay metalcore rockers Parkway Drive also had to settle for number two in the past couple of weeks. For Minogue, grabbing the top spot would have meant a triumphant return home - she's due in Australia any day now for a promotional tour for Aphrodite. Minogue's 12-track album features the dance single All The Lovers, which has jumped back up the Aussie singles chart this week to number 18 from 30, but has only managed to peak at number 14 since its June 13 release. The single is number nine in the UK singles chart this week. The ARIA singles chart top spot again went to Katy Perry, who held strong for a third-week running with her hit California Gurls featuring rapper Snoop Dogg. Enrique Iglesias has experienced a surprise escalation on the singles chart, with I Like It proving the Spanish pop sensation hasn't lost his appeal. On the country albums chart, a compilation of various Australian artists is winning fans nationwide with a four-spot leap to number four this week. There was little other major movement on the country albums chart, besides Taylor Swift slipping from second to fifth and a best-of Dolly Parton album shooting up six places to enter the top 10.
