Harrington: Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top make for classic-rock magic weekend in Bay Area Posted: 25 Aug 2010 01:07 AM PDT By Jim Harrington PULL OUT your best black concert T-shirt -- the one that proves you were "there" during the 1979 tour -- and get ready for classic-rock nirvana this week at Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View. The tent-shaped venue will host two major radio station-sponsored shows in the next few days. And both should be pretty good -- well, at least, if you're into ringing guitar solos, big-hair drum beats and songs you've heard 436 times before. First up is KFOX-FM's Kihncert 2010 on Sunday, featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blue Oyster Cult and, of course, namesake act the Greg Kihn Band. I like Kihn better than I like his music, but nevertheless, it should be fun to hear the KFOX DJ perform his version of Weird Al Yankovic's "I Lost on Jeopardy." (Yes, I know -- Kihn did his song first.) I also have a soft spot for Blue Oyster Cult, and not just because I watch "Godzilla" movies. BOC was the headliner at the first concert I ever attended, part of a triple-bill that also featured Cheap Trick and the Pat Travers Band at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. (Vanity prohibits me from telling you the year.) The headliner for the Kihncert is Lynyrd Skynyrd, which I saw perform fairly recently at Wente Vineyards in Livermore. These Southern rock legends definitely can still deliver the goods in concert. Show time is 6 p.m. Tickets are $10-$75. Next up is the Bone Bash XI, hosted by KSAN-FM 107.7 (The Bone), with headliner ZZ Top. The Texas trio never seems to age, largely because the musicians looked like they were already in their 60s when they first hit the scene. Southern rockers .38 Special are also on the bill. Tickets are $10.77-$79.50.Shoreline is at 1 Amphitheatre Parkway. For information on either show, call 877-598-6659 or visit www.livenation.com. Tune in to Stereo: Any act that covers both Serge Gainsbourg and KC and the Sunshine Band is OK in my book. Those are just two artists that have made Stereo Total's play list. The Berlin-based indie-pop duo, which incorporates bits of New Wave and Electronica into its dance-friendly sound, has also covered the Velvet Underground, Hot Chocolate and Françoise Hardy. And definitely don't miss the band's rendition of Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It." Stereo Total performs mostly in German, French and English, but occasionally mix in Turkish, Spanish and Japanese as well. Suffice it to say that there aren't too many bands like Stereo Total out there. The duo, consisting of Françoise Cactus and Brezel Goring, performs a 9 p.m. show Thursday at Slim's, 333 11th St., SF. Stereo Total is touring behind its recently released CD "Baby ouh!" Tickets for the show are $18-$20. Call 415-255-0333 or visit www.slims-sf.com. CD release: South Bay punk-rock band NVS -- featuring vocalist Walter Campbell, bassist Kyle Lester, guitarists Tom "Tre" Retter and Jordan Schwarz and drummer Micah Turney -- is set to release its new CD, "Music To $hop To." And it wants you to be among the first to hear the material. The group is set to perform a CD release party at 8 p.m. Saturday at the cumbersomely titled X Sports Bar + Music Lounge at Homestead Lanes (20990 Homestead Road in Cupertino). Also on the bill is FTB and Relapse. Tickets are just $5. Call 408-255-5700 or visit www.homesteadlanes.com. To get a taste of the NVS sound, which might help you decide if you actually want to attend the show, check out www.myspace.com/nvs. Upcoming shows: David Gray and Ray LaMontagne -- I'd be more into this folk-pop fandango if the former weren't on the bill. Nothing against Gray, but LaMontagne is just simply amazing. Details: 7 p.m. Sept. 10; Greek Theatre, UC Berkeley; $29.50-$75; 800-745-3000, www.apeconcerts.com.
